overwhelming amount of evidence, the Turkish Government continues to deny that the genocide ever took place.
The commemorative events will begin on Sunday, May 17, with a divine liturgy at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
From there, invited guests, dignitaries and the public will proceed to the only Pontic Greek Memorial in Canada, situated in
behind the former East York Civic Centre, (850 Coxwell Avenue) for a wreath laying ceremony scheduled to take place at 1:
00pm. The events will culminate on Tuesday, May 19, the world wide Day of Remembrance, at the Greek Community’s
main offices at 7:00pm (30 Thorncliffe Park Drive) with an exhibition of photos, newspaper articles and other documentation
as well as speeches and presentations. The invited speakers include Dr. Theodosis Kyriakides, currently conducting
research in the Vatican, and a world renowned expert on the subject of the Pontion Genocide; Mr. Aris Babikian, President of
the Armenian National Committee of Canada; and the acclaimed author of the book entitled “Not Even My Name,” Ms. Thea
Halo.
“In light of recent happenings in Toronto with the closing of roadways by protesters, the public’s awareness of the subject of
Genocide has been heightened. Commemorative events are critical in reminding the rest of the world exactly what
happened to our forefathers. The descendants of the victims of the Genocide must safeguard the historical record and not
allow the active efforts of revisionism in some quarters to go uncontested. The atrocities committed against our ancestors
must never be forgotten,” stated Jon-Carlos Tsilfidis, Director of Public Relations of the Pontion Community of Toronto.
